Beyond the Caribbean
Camikara’s recent awards success highlights a shift that has been building for some time. Rum is no longer defined by one region.
The Caribbean remains central to the category. That heritage carries weight and will continue to do so. At the same time, new producers are entering the conversation and gaining recognition.
That changes the landscape.
More regions mean more diversity. Different climates, different production styles and different flavour profiles. That can strengthen the category, but it also creates a need for clearer definition.
If everything is included, what anchors the identity of rum?
Camikara positions itself around process and purity. That aligns with what many consumers are now looking for. Transparency is becoming more important. People want to understand what they are drinking.
Awards help bring attention, but they are only part of the picture. Long-term success depends on distribution, education and repeat purchase.
For the trade, this opens up new options. It creates opportunities to introduce something different to customers. It also requires confidence. Staff need to be able to explain what makes these products distinct.
So is this the start of a broader shift, or a moment of recognition for a few standout brands?
There is no clear answer yet.
What is clear is that the category is expanding. That brings energy, but it also brings complexity.
The challenge now is to grow without losing clarity.
Because confusion slows momentum.
